What Is A Dental Implant?

Your Guide To The Basics

Dental implants are small, screw-shaped titanium rods that are surgically implanted into your gums and jaw bone. Once implanted, they permanently bond with the jaw bone, and function as an artificial “root.”

Depending on whether you get one or more implants, a variety of dental implant restorations can be attached to them, such as a crown, a dental bridge, or an implant-supported denture. These dental prostheses replace your natural teeth, restoring your smile.

The Benefits

Dental Implants

Dental implants have a wide variety of benefits. First, they can last 30+ years with proper care, which is much longer than alternatives like dentures and dental bridges. In addition, implants help strengthen and support your jaw bone, preventing bone resorption after tooth loss.

Implants also look and feel completely natural and will never shift or move when you chew or speak. They’re easy to care for, too. Single-tooth implants, for example, can be treated just like a natural tooth. All you have to do is brush and floss regularly and see Dr. Reddy for a checkup every six months.

What To Expect

The Implant Placement Process

To begin, Dr. Reddy will clean and numb the treatment site. We will also provide you with sedation, if desired. We offer laughing gas sedation, which will help you feel safe and comfortable during the process.

Once you are comfortable, Dr. Reddy will create an opening in the gum and jaw tissue, and place the dental implant directly into this opening. She will then secure the implant in place, and disinfect and suture the treatment area to promote proper healing. This process will be repeated if you’re having multiple dental implants placed.

Then, you’ll be sent home. Over the next several months, you’ll come in for a few more appointments to monitor your healing and have your implant restoration built. Once your mouth is healed and your restoration is complete, it will be bonded into place permanently.

Dental Implant Healing & Aftercare

Recovering After Surgery

It will take about 1-2 weeks to heal after the initial implant placement process. You will need to adjust your diet and take some other special precautions to ensure your mouth heals properly. Dr. Reddy will provide you with detailed instructions after your surgery.

While the initial healing process is quite short, it takes around 3-6 months for your implant to fully bond with your jaw bone. You’ll come back to our office after a few weeks for your first follow-up appointment to check on your healing process, and return several more times throughout this 3-6 month period to have your implant restoration fitted and to ensure that your mouth is healing properly.
